An Irish Engagement is a comedic play written by Walter Watts and adapted by Connie Newhook to reflect 18th century Placentia. The story revolves around a couple whose relationship is threatened by an old agreement surrounding an arranged marriage. In this classic Victorian farce, Mr. O’Brien has betrothed his daughter to a gentleman from Tipperary, whom he has never seen, while the young lady has chosen a lover for herself in the person of a Captain Gallagher. The play follows the hilarious attempts of the couple to convince her father of their love and win his approval, as they enlist an Irish servant, Tim Rafferty, to impersonate the absent lover, and so disgust the old gentleman to make him break the contract. This delightfully entertaining play, with its eccentric characters and witty dialogue, is full of humorous situations.

The show was catered by Harold Hotel under the management of John Kelly, and they served a 3 course meal each evening that includes salad, dinner rolls, stuffed chicken breast with mashed potatoes and vegetables, as well as dessert and tea/coffee.
