Anton Chekhov’s A Marriage Proposal is adapted by Darren Ivany for the Placentia Theatre Festival through Year of the Arts Funding. This fast-paced farce about love, lively arguments, and medical episodes brings Chekhov’s classic story to 1880s Placentia where a wealthy, hypochondriac merchant has come to the home of his even more wealthy neighbour with one goal: proposing marriage to his neighbour’s fetching daughter. However, when the daughter proves to be as fiery as she is fetching, the proposal devolves into impassioned debates, bawdy bon mots, and raucous repartee. Will the daughter accept the merchant’s hand in marriage? Will he even get to ask before he passes out from the vapours? All of this and more will be revealed in…A Pleasant Proposal.
