Last season, this adaptation (by Connie Newhook with assistance from Darren Ivany) was brought to the stage thanks to a funding partnership between the Freshwater Come Home Year Committee and the Port of Argentia, and we are happy to bring it back to the stage this season.
This play uses ideas and material from the play written by Jerry Doyle and the book of the same name written by Eileen Houlihan. It captures the dramatic events that took place in 1941 through the eyes of the Argentia residents who were moved out of their homes to make way for the American Naval Base during World War II. The community leader Father Dee fights for the rights of his parish but not all of them see eye to eye with him. The residents, for the most part, take it all in stride, packing up their belongings as they watch their town being burned and subsequently razed. And their dead loved ones moved into a mass grave in nearby Freshwater. The impact of the move is still felt today by those who are connected to this history that saw a proud community give up their piece of the world for the sake of the entire world.
